I bet you thought I meant that cows aren’t cool or something when I said they were square. Nope, that is not what I meant by cows being square. I was referring to drawing cows, not how socially hip they are. And, for that matter, cows are unbelievably hip. They are the bomb. That’s why they are so placid. They do not need your approval to be cool, they know they are cool.

But cows are square because when you draw a cow, the best way to start is to draw a square. That’s because a cow’s basic body shape is very similar to a square. Their backs are fairly flat, their hindquarters slope in a little, but mostly go straight down, and their bellies are fairly flat (ok, they sag a little, and they have that big udder), and their front shoulders are pretty straight too. So you make a square and then add the head, the udder and the legs and tail and you’ve got a basic cow. Cool!
