On a long distance cycle tour you will find, as you head into the more rural districts, that you have little or no need to buy wine. Of course some people never buy wine under any circumstances but if you are French and you love riding bicycles then you will probably be stopping for a chance to buy wine. At every village. The odd thing is that when you have been riding for days and are no longer within hailing distance of the great big messy city you will notice that the people begin behaving somewhat differently. When locals see a cyclist covered in saddlebags and road dirt a change comes over them and they immediately invite tired rider in for some wine. It is perhaps not advisable for the rider to accept this invitation but these globe-trotting cyclists are a friendly bunch and hate to disappoint so they inevitably end up too hung over to leave the next morning. Or the next, and sometimes even the third as well.
