Battered Woman Syndrome is a form of Post-Traumatic Stress identified as a psychological condition of someone – specifically a woman – who has experienced prolonged and/or severe domestic violence. A woman must have undergone two cycles of abuse before they can be classified as a battered woman.

Generally, there are four phases ofBattered Woman’s Syndrome and this includes denial, guilt, enlightenment and responsibility.

A battered woman with this syndrome typically has four characteristics. First, she believes the abusive behavior of her spouse is her own fault. Secondly, she doesn’t know where else she can place the responsibility of the violence. Thirdly, she fears for her and her children’s lives. Finally, she thinks that the abuser is omniscient and omnipresent.

Women should know that spousal abuse doesn’t specifically originate from a problem within the relationshipitself but, oftentimes, it’s a result of a man’s emotional insecurities, low self-esteem and abusive behaviors seen during his childhood.
