The mangosteen is a fruit from Southeast Asia, near Indonesia. It is round, purple, and about the size of a clementine or medium sized tomato. When opened it has a fibrous interior that, at first glance, may have the appearance vaguely like a head of garlic. The rind of the fruit is not edible, but the interior pulp is sweet and juicy. The interior pulp is also has no nutritional value. The skin, inedible though it is, is rich in several nutrients including xanthones which are now believed to help the body fight cancer. These xanthones are also thought to help reduce inflammation and have anti-fungal properties as well. Mangosteen juice is a way to get around the problem of the inedible portion of the fruit being the part with nutrients. Mangosteen juice is comprised of the entire fruit, blended. This provides consumers with a pleasant tasting yet nutritious beverage.
